
DeWitt first performed on stage when she was 13. DeWitt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Following that, while performing in summer stock, the director convinced her to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she worked as a secretary before making her first appearance on TV in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors never met. DeWitt is most well-known for her character Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered following her casting in the show's second pilot. Janet was also in an episode of the show The Ropers, which she appeared in in 1979. DeWitt began her acting career in a scene in 1984 on Three's Company. She made her return to the stage in the month of June in 1991 when she was a performer in an episode of the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she appeared in the film Spring Fling, a 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain aired an episode in 1997 that featured characters based on her. The voice actor was another actress. She was in an episode Cybill and also made a brief appearance in Living Single's last episode.
