Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a web site which hosts video and commentary on the representation of gender roles in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit site for education that investigates gender representation in popular culture narratives - is created and is directed by Sarkeesian. Aiming to break down the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of people in the online space. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Alongside being a popular public speaker she has made presentations at TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to create a web series that would examine gender representation in video games. She found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. The incident did not deter her, but instead strengthened her resolve as feminist media critic. To honor the numerous accomplishments she's made to feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization which studies the portrayals of women in popular culture stories.
